I have never been to Athens before, but this was my first trip here and I absolutely loved it. The food is delicious and the prices are quite similar to other countries I have visited, so I did not find them expensive. If you walk around and explore, you will find many economic and excellent options for food. I did not face any issues related to transportation. However, I heard from the locals that it's important to be careful with your bag and phone and avoid wearing gold jewellery to avoid any unpleasant situations.

Athens is a great city to visit because most of the main attractions are centrally located. We walked everywhere in the central historical area - though even in our 60s, we are fit - it may not be for everyone, so simply buy the multiday metro/tram/bus ticket. The central historical area is amazing; just buy the 6+1 combo ticket on line (Acropolis plus 6 additional sites). You will have to pick the time and date that you will enter the Acropolis, but the other sites you can visit anytime over the three-day validity of the ticket. It is a shame about the scaffolding on the Parthenon....just the way of things - don't let it spoil your trip. The change of the guard at Syntagma (right outside the Metro and up the steps) is unusual to say the least. Very exacting and ceremonial, it left me thinking, 'Just get on with it!' but it was spellbinding to watch. From the airport, the metro is your friend - goes right into the city center and lots of stops with one bound to be near your place. Pack light ! Avoid the big suitcases - you won't need the contents. One walking shoes, one nicer pair! Athens is relaxed and makes do with less. Eating: Instead of heading directly to the hubbub of Syntagma, Monastiraki, or Kolonaki, venture a little into the backwaters.
